I'm fundraising for a great cause!

On Saturday 12 September, I’ll be pushing a 45kg double pram for 5km to raise funds for the Australasian Birth Trauma Association. I’ll be joined by my family as we #starttheconversation for the Walk n Talk event to raise awareness around birth trauma and it’s impact on families.

ABTA is a national charity committed to reducing the instance and impact of birth-related trauma whilst supporting affected women, families and health professionals.

1 in 3 Australian women identify their birth as traumatic and research suggests that 10-20% of first-time mothers may suffer major irreversible physical birth trauma. It's likely that you know someone who has experienced birth trauma.

ABTA is almost entirely funded by donations and I hope to raise funds and awareness for them. If you could donate to my fundraising, every dollar will help ABTA expand their support service and reach more women in need Nationwide.

For too long women and families have suffered in silence, but the power is in sharing our stories and using our voices so other people don’t need to walk this journey alone. #starttheconversation

My Updates

Wow! You people are amazing!

Friday 4th Sep
I was overwhelmed and delighted to hit my initial $250 fundraising goal - so I went all out and upped it to a whopping $1000!

To me, the fact that people have engaged with this topic is testament to how widespread this issue is. Basically, if you know a woman who's given birth, there's a good chance you know someone impacted by physical or psychological (or both) birth trauma.

Bringing life into this world is A. Big. Deal. It is physically and mentally demanding even when everything goes well - but there are many situations that make it much worse - emergency c section, too long/too short labour, NICU or problems with the little one, infant loss, inadequate pain relief, previous trauma/abuse, haemorrhage, injuries (short term and life long), breastfeeding challenges ... just to name a few.

As a society, we expect SO MUCH of new mothers. So often, they are hit with unhelpful comments like "all that matters is you have a healthy baby", "oh prolapse is common, it's reasonable to wet yourself if you've had children" (FYI. It's not. And common does not equal normal), "don't worry you can have another one", "it was only one day", "what did you expect?", "women have been doing this for millennia without pain relief" ....

So what do these woman and families need? Access to information and support services during pregnancy and afterwards so they can make informed decisions and work through whatever they have encountered. It's 2020. This is not too much to ask. They should not be told to be quiet and hide away. They should not have their questions brushed aside.

New mothers need to be better nurtured by our society and the work ABTA is doing is going a great way towards that.

Thank you all so much for your support! Your contribution has made a real impact to individuals, families and future generations.
