What is the BIG STEP Challenge?
The Big Step Challenge is a fundraising event for the Australasian Birth Trauma Association.
We encourage participants that have experienced birth trauma themselves, along with friends, family, colleagues and health professionals. Everyone is welcome.
Why is it called the BIG STEP Challenge?
We thought about this (a lot).
We understand that for those who have been impacted by birth trauma the road to healing is a series of steps.
What may look like a small step to some can be a big step for others.
But, you know what? Its time to take a step. You will know if it's big enough. It's that simple.
What do I have to do?
It could be to walk 110,000 steps in recognition of the estimated number of mothers who experience birth trauma each and every year in Australia.
It could be another pledge that suits where you are in your journey right now. Check out the ideas below.
But I'm still not sure what my BIG STEP is?
Let's get some ideas going:
- Learn some new dance steps and put on a show.
- Step up the stairs and not the lift.
- Step down one stop early on your daily commute.
- Step into the pool and let the water help you.
- Step into nature or a new neighbourhood.
- Step away and commit to some extra time for yourself.
- Step back to an old hobby you love.
- Step forward to a new interest or skill.

Where do the funds go that I raise?
Every dollar you raise will go towards the Australasian Birth Trauma Association (ABTA), the first charity in Australia and New Zealand supporting women, partners and families after birth-related trauma. With one in three women identifying their birth as traumatic, ABTA’s work is vital for these women and their families.
You'll help fund vital programs such as our Peer2Peer Meets support groups, a 7-week program that helps parents who have suffered from birth related trauma, and THINKNATAL a series of educational resources helping better prepare women for pregnancy and birth.
Is there a minimum amount I need to raise?
No way. We value every participant and every dollar raised.
Every dollar raised goes towards funding the Australasian Birth Trauma Association's life changing work in supporting women and their families experiencing birth related trauma.
Who do I contact if I have any other questions?
You can contact us at support@birthtrauma.org.au

What more do I need to consider?
If you are getting back to physical activity after a break or are starting physical activity for the first time, it's good to start gradually and consult a health professional.
We also don't want you to do anything that causes you pain or discomfort. If physical activity like walking, running or dancing isn't right for you right now, consider some of the different ways you can get involved
Take care.
